Upland Crop Breeding Division

We are striving to enhance food self-sufficiency and revitalize the agricultural industry through the development of superior varieties of Korea’s representative field crops-soybean, sesame, perilla, and mung bean-and the use of digital breeding technologies.
High-yielding soybean Pyeongan Combine-harvestable sesame Haniall Soybean Core Collection Analysis
  • Expanding the development and dissemination of varieties adapted to paddy field cultivation and mechanization to increase self-sufficiency in soybeans and mung beans
    • Expand dissemination of long-term cultivation varieties 'Seonpung' and 'Daechan' to replace 'Daewon'
    • Development of the high-yielding soybean variety 'Pyeongan' adapted to paddy field cultivation and mechanization
    • Development of the high-yielding mung bean variety 'Chaeheun' with reduced pod shattering and improved sprout yield
      • Yield: 238 → 257 kg/10a, Shattering ratio: 39.9% → 13.5, Sprout yield: 710% → 762
  • Development of mechanization-adapted and functionally enhanced sesame and perilla varieties
    • (Sesame) Dissemination of the non-shattering and mechanization-adapted sesame variety 'Haniall' and the disease-resistant, high-yielding variety 'Youngwoong'
    • (Seed Perilla) Development of 'Saechan' to replace the widely cultivated 'Dayu' (65%) (2024)
    • (Leaf Perilla) Development of ‘Saebom’ (2020) and ‘Neulbom’ (2024) with well-developed inner leaves and high leaf yield
  • Development of new breeding materials and breeding technologies based on genomic information
    • Establishment of genomic, phenotypic, and metabolomic databases for upland crops and development of trait-specific markers for breeding target traits
      • (Core collection / Genetic Populations) Soybean: 430 accessions, Sesame: 360, Perilla: 330, Mung bean: 270
      • (Molecular Markers) Soybean: 8 (pod-shattering, Phytophthora, protein content, beany flavor), Sesame: 4 (pod-shattering, lignan content), Perilla: 1 (bacterial blight)
