Varietal improvement

Varietal improvement

(1) Varities released The soybean breeding project during 1960s to early 1980s was mainly conducted on development of soybean varieties for soy sauce and tofu, and yield was first important target and seed appearance was second important during the period. the objectives of soybean breeding in late 1980s to up to date was focused on improvement of varieties for high processing quality and seed appearance by use, because of globalization and liberalization of trade for agricultural products. Diverse soybean varieties by use were developed by the results of such efforts. Total 116 soybean varieties were released in Korea since 1906. Among them 43 varieties were discarded and 73 varieties, including 31 for soy sauce and tofu, 22 for bean sprout, 10 for cooking with rice, and 10 for vegetable and early type, are propagating in 2003.

(2) Current status and strategy in breeding The breeding goals are to develop the soybeans of ;
  (a) For soy sauce and tofu
    1) Cultivars with high quality, mechanized farming adaptability, high disaster resistance.
    2) Short season cultivars adaptable to double cropping.
    3) Cultivars with extremely large seed, high quality, high protein content, and high isoflavone content.
  (b) For soybean sprout with high sprouting ability, high storability, improved eating quality
  (c) For cooking with rice with coloured large seed, green cotyledon, high cooking and eating qualities, resistance to soybean mosaic virus and lodging.
  (d) For vegetable with early maturity, large seed, high quality, and high yield.
  (e) For early soybean with early maturity, large seed, resistance to seed infection.
